Christian Comment: Expectantly Expectant

Expectant. A strange word, most often used in relation to pregnant mothers who wait patiently (or impatiently!) for the birth of their child. It implies that women and families are waiting with anticipation, with hope, and with an uncontrolled, roller-coaster of fear and joy for the arrival of their newest family member.

There is a saying, “pregnant with hope”. This expression describes a state of intense, eager, patient expectation for a positive future outcome, often despite current difficulties or uncertainty.

It suggests that hope is not just a feeling, but something active, nurturing, and growing within a person, similar to how a foetus grows within a mother. It can refer to active anticipation experienced in waiting for a new beginning, or a long-awaited promise. In essence, being ‘pregnant with hope’ means nurturing a promise and believing that the best is yet to come, even when it cannot yet be seen.

Expectant. A strange word. But I believe it is a word for today. I believe we are to live expectantly expectant.

Believers and followers of God, are to live with a combination of faith and hope, and believing that the promises of God’s Word will come true, despite what our circumstances look like.

He has shown Himself to be faithful in the past. He has not changed. So, why not now?

God’s Word says that when we seek the Lord with all of our hearts, we will find Him (Jeremiah 29:13). He will reveal Himself to us.

Do you have a relationship with God? Have you experienced His love for you? Test Him.

Try Him out. Seek Him. Be expectantly expectant. Who knows how He might reveal Himself to you.

One thing is certain. He will.
