Nominations are now open for the Citizen Science Awards, which highlight the achievements of South Australian citizen science projects in advancing scientific knowledge and understanding.

Organised by Inspiring South Australia, the Department for Environment and Water and the South Australian Chapter of the Australian Citizen Science Association (ACSA), the awards are open to all citizen science groups and individuals.

ACSA SA chapter chair Sylvia Clarke said with the number and real-world impact of projects increasing every year this was an exciting time for citizen science in South Australia.

“We welcome nominations from citizen science projects where the South Australian public are making contributions to any scientific field, from environmental sciences to health sciences to astronomy,” she said.

Citizen science can help bridge gaps in research data, enhance science communication, and cultivate a deeper appreciation for the natural world, through educational initiatives and outreach programs.

The award offers two prizes, a first prize of $5000 and a finalist prize of $2500, and it is hoped the prize money would further support the project or to generate new projects.

Nominations close at 10am Tuesday, June 11.
