Sarah Laurie is branching out.

Well known to many as the founder of Salubrious Apparel, a clothing label with stores in Robe and Adelaide, Ms Laurie is also a talented artist.

She is bringing her eye for colour and design to her exhibition of digital artwork at Karatta Wine Room and Gallery in Robe, opening on Saturday, April 27.

For Ms Laurie, fine art is a natural progression from her experience screen printing images for clothing. In her exhibition for Karatta, she has used the digital art program Procreate to draw what makes her feel good, often using her own life and inspiration from her local environment for inspiration.

Drawing on her childhood experiences growing up on a farm and riding horses, her subject matter is dominated by images of cowboys, but not as you might know them.

Under Ms Laurie’s sure hand, the cowboys are highlighted with brilliant pops of colour and a confident line resulting in dynamic and energetic images. To add to her unique approach, the artist also takes text from books she has read or quotes from people she knows and transposes these as another layer onto her work, resulting in a personal and highly appealing style.

Although cowboys are the dominant theme, she is also inspired by Robe’s spectacular coastline with local flora and landmarks including the Obelisk apparent.

For her landscape works, Ms Laurie takes multiple photographs and combines elements from each into a single image using the Procreate program. She then takes days away from each work to refresh her eye, once again using colour to enhance her perception of the local landscape.

She hopes that people leave her exhibition feeling inspired by the creative process. “I believe people don’t realise how much possibility there is for their own lives. There are no rules for being creative: it’s really only what you like”.

This inspiring exhibition is on display from April 27 until June 10 at the Karatta Wine Room and Gallery, 5 Victoria Street Robe.
